Ap Lang quotes Essays
Ap Lang quotes Essays Ap Lang quotes Paper Ap Lang quotes Paper ââ¬Å"By telling stories, you objectify your own experience. You separate it from yourself. You pin down certain truths. You make up others. You start sometimes with an incident that truly happened, like the night in the shit field, and you carry it forward by inventing incidents that did not in fact occur but that nonetheless help to clarify and explain. â⬠(p. 158) ââ¬Å"War is hell, but thatââ¬â¢s not the half of it, because war is also mystery and terror and adventure and courage and discovery and holiness and pity and despair and longing and love. War is nasty; war is fun. War is thrilling; war is drudgery. War makes you a man; war makes you dead. The truths are contradictory. It can be argued, for instance, that war is grotesque. But in truth war is also beauty. For all its horror, you canââ¬â¢t help but gape at the awful majesty of combat. â⬠(p. 80) ââ¬Å"Mary Anne made you think about all those girls back home, how clean and innocent they are, how theyââ¬â¢ll never understand any of this, not in a billion years. Try to tell them about it, theyââ¬â¢ll just stare at you with those big round candy eyes. They wonââ¬â¢t understand zip. Itââ¬â¢s like trying to tell someone what chocolate tastes like. â⬠(Pg. 113) ââ¬Å"They moved like mules. By daylight they took sniper fire, at night they were mortared, but it was not battle, it was just the endless march, village to village, without purpose, nothing won or lost. They marched for the sake of the march. â⬠(pg . 15) When you tell stories it is from your perspective and own experience. You do tell the truth but also you sometimes make up a few lies to make the story more interesting. Sometimes the people youââ¬â¢re telling it to do believe what you tell them. But honestly no one will know unless they were there. This quote is significant because it is telling the truth. War is a contradiction. War can be good and war can be bad. But it is all different in peopleââ¬â¢s eyes. Since the soldiers barely got to see their lovers and spouses, Mary Anne made it visible to how their family will see it. How their spouses will just sit there and listen to your stories not knowing how hard you fought and all the struggles you went through. Mary Anne was one of the first women to experience war and actually fall in love with it. This quote is significant because it describes the soldiersââ¬â¢ motion throughout the day and night. How they marched for no reason, just because they felt like marching. The thing is, he wrote, theres no place to go. Not just in this lousy town. In general. My life, I mean. Its almost like I got killed over in Nam Hard to describe. That night when Kiowa got wasted, I sort of sank down into sewage with him Feels like Im still in deep shit' (156). ââ¬Å"After a firefight, there is always the immense pleasure of aliveness. The trees are alive. The grass, the soil-everything You feel an intense, out-of-the-skin awareness of your living self- your truest self, the human being you want to be In the midst of evil you want to be a good man. You want decency things you never knew you wanted Though itââ¬â¢s odd, youre never more alive than when youre almost dead. You recognize whats valuable(81) Later, I remember, Kiowa tried to tell me that the man wouldve died anyway. He told me that it was a good kill, that I was a soldier and this was a war, and that I should shape up and stop staring and ask myself what the dead man wouldve done if things were reversed(133). ââ¬Å"At one point, I remember, we paused over a snapshot of Ted Lavender, and after a while Jimmy rubbed his eyes and said hed never forgiven himself for Lavenders death. It was something that would never go away, he said quietly, and I nodded and told him I felt the same about certain things. 27) ââ¬Å"He was a slim, dead, almost dainty young man of about twenty. He lay with one leg bent beneath him, his jaw in his throat, his face neither expressive nor inexpressive. One eye was shut. The other was a star-shaped holeâ⬠. (124) ââ¬Å"They carried the soldierââ¬â¢s greatest fear, which was the fear of blushing. Men killed, and died, because they were embarrassed not toâ⠬ (21). This quote is significant because it gives his perspective of after the war. Basically itââ¬â¢s impossible to forget and it has caused his lack of life. In this quote, Tim is describing the things they felt that we wouldnââ¬â¢t ever understand. He is also creating imagery for us to imagine. Kiowa was trying to convince the soldier that it wasnââ¬â¢t his fault the other man died. Kiowa made him realize at a different point of view to show him, that this is a war, they arenââ¬â¢t saving any soles that look suspect because anything can happen IN this quote it is reflecting on Lavenders death. It is also showing how Jimmy took it, that he couldnââ¬â¢t believe it was true. That he blames himself for his death cause if he was looking out for him he would still be there. This quote is describing the soldier that was blown up by a grenade when a grenade was thrown randomly and the soldier This quote is significant because this shows peer pressure in war times. It shows that men had to prove a point. ââ¬Å"Curt Lemom was dead. Rat Kiley lost his best friend in the world. â⬠(page 79) ââ¬Å"We kept the dead alive with stories. When Ted Lavender was shot in the head, the men talked about how theyââ¬â¢d never seen him so mellow, how tranquil he was, how it wasnââ¬â¢t the bullet but the tranquilizers that blew his mind. â⬠(p. 226) ââ¬Å"It doesnââ¬â¢t matter,â⬠he finally said. ââ¬Å"I love herâ⬠(29) ââ¬Å"But the thing about remembering is that you donââ¬â¢t forget. You take your material where you find it, which is in your life, at the intersection of past and present. (34) My conscience told me to run, but some irrational and powerful force was resisting, like a weight pushing me toward the war. What it came down to, stupidly, was a sense of shame. (pg. 52) Youre a shadow. You slip out of your own skin, like molting, shedding your own history and your own future, leaving behind everything you ever were or wanted or believed in. (pg. 211) Forty-three years old, and the war occurred half a life-time ago, and yet the remembering makes it now. And sometimes remembering will lead to a story, which makes it forever. Stories are for joining the past to the future. Stories are for those late hours in the night when you cant remember how you got from where you were to where you are. (38 This quote shows that Rat lost his only truly best friends. He even wrote a letter to his sister and talked about all the good times they had together, but she didnââ¬â¢t write him back. This is saying that by telling the dead stories they still keep them alive in their eyes. They will always remember them. Heââ¬â¢s realizing that distance or anything couldnââ¬â¢t stop him from loving that girl. Basically, youââ¬â¢ll always take what you remember and apply it somewhere else in your life. He had a feeling that he shouldââ¬â¢ve ran away from the war but later he realizes that it was just a sense of being apprehensive. Heââ¬â¢s saying how you could easily do this and leave everything youââ¬â¢ve ever dreamed behind. Which wasnââ¬â¢t good. Timââ¬â¢s just explain what remembering the war stories mean. He tells us that the stories are for late at when you canââ¬â¢t remember where you were. Also, ââ¬Å"Azar shrugged. After a second he reached out and clapped me on the shoulder, not roughly but not gently either. ââ¬ËWhatââ¬â¢s real? ââ¬â¢ he said. ââ¬ËEight months in fantasyland, it tends to blur the line. Honest to God, I sometimes canââ¬â¢t remember what real is. â⬠(Page 204) ââ¬Å"Twenty years. A lot like yesterday, a lot like never. In a way, maybe, Iââ¬â¢d gone under with Kiowa, and now after two decades Iââ¬â¢d finally worked myself out. A hot afternoon, a bright August sun, and the war was over. â⬠(Page 187) ââ¬Å"He wished he couldââ¬â¢ve explained some of this. How he had been braver than he ever thought possible, but how he had not been so brave as he wanted to be. The distinction was important. â⬠(Page 153) Then he squatted down. Iââ¬â¢ll tell you the straight truth, he said. The guy was dead the second he stepped on the trail. Understand me? We all had him zeroed. (page 123) Rat pours his heart out. He says he loved the guy. He says the guy was his best friend in the world. They were like soul mates, he says, like twins or something, they had a whole lot in common. (page 68) Later we heard that Strunk died somewhere over Chu Lai, which s eemed to relieve David Jensen of an enormous weight. (page 66) This is significant because it shows how the war had changed him and he can barely remember things. It shows a lot of things go on around there and we never know about it. He had finally gone with himself. He was all by himself without anybodies help and it felt good. He was doubting himself and beating himself up because of how the situation went. After it was all over, he knew that he couldââ¬â¢ve handled that. He was trying to tell the boy that even before all the commotion had happened, the man was already dead. So honestly he didnââ¬â¢t really kill him from his point. Rat writes his best friendââ¬â¢s sister a letter after he dies and he tell her all the good times with him and how good of a person he was. And in return she doesnââ¬â¢t reply. This is significant because they both had made a deal that they would take each other out of their misery if they saw them suffering but in this situation, David didnââ¬â¢t want to be the one to do that. So as of Chu dying on his own it relieve. He got into his car and rolled down the window. Make me out to be a good guy, okay? Brave and handsome, all that stuff. Best platoon leader ever. He hesitated for a second. And do me a favor. Dont mention anything about-No, I said, I wont. (pg 30) In this quote we can see how Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried a doleful secret with him. Also, he still feels the guilt of Lavenders death.

Essay on Masao Miyoshi and Tamura Toshiko Essay Example
Essay on Masao Miyoshi and Tamura Toshiko Essay Example Essay on Masao Miyoshi and Tamura Toshiko Paper Essay on Masao Miyoshi and Tamura Toshiko Paper Tamura Toshiko, Masao Miyoshi Against the Grain by Masao Miyoshi advocates that the western reader approaches strange foreign texts as acts of self-affirmation to adjust to the cultural distances exhibited by the narrative. Differences are exaggerated to accommodate what is seen as normal and the reader assimilates differences into the hegemony of life cycles present in birth, death, happiness and suffering. In this way the reader is able to neutralize the strangeness of novel text. She describes western reactions to a foreign text, such as Japanese literature, as a way to distance the foreingess from the readers proximity. Further, academics who present themselves as experts of Japanes literature cover up their lack of engagement with a text they do not understand with a flurry of adjectives, such as delicate or incomprehensible. In a similar vein, the admired archetype of the Woman Writer in Japan, Tamura Toshiko used her writing, The Great Divide to look for recognition of female writers in Japan. Sje explores the cultural distances between women and men in general, and of emancipated Japanese women bounded by cultural expectations. Her conceptions of the New Woman highlighted woman as being the other, strange and foreign. Her critique of Japanese patriarchy was later replaced by writing of racism that she witnessed in her travels around the Pacific Rim. Her writings about ideologies of nationalism, race and gender were powerful, though remained largely unread in the west until their dissemination in 1922 by postwar writer Setouchi Harumi. Toshiko is notable for being one of the first Japanese female writers to use psychological narrative to explore womens aspirations, sexuality and conceptions of freedom. Her depictions of women challenged popular social conceptions of the time that women were inferior, and had life experiences that were diametrically different to those of Japanese males. Toshikos later writing about nationalism and racism reflected her inward emancipation of Japanese women as she sought to illustrate experiences of social dictates and conventional mortality.

Musings on the Uses of Abash
Musings on the Uses of Abash Musings on the Uses of ââ¬Å"Abashâ⬠Musings on the Uses of ââ¬Å"Abashâ⬠By Maeve Maddox The word abash has always seemed to me to belong more to the literary sphere than to the workplace. Thatââ¬â¢s why I did a double-take when I read this on a site dedicated to marketing: A corporation operating in a capitalist society has the obligation to make a profit. It does not have the obligation to make friends, except where/when that would lead to profit.à It does not have an obligation to abash itself at every possible opportunity. I wondered if the word was being used as a synonym for ââ¬Å"bashâ⬠in the sense of ââ¬Å"disparage.â⬠As a transitive verb abash means To destroy the self-possession or confidence of (any one), to put out of countenance, confound, discomfit, or check with a sudden consciousness of shame, presumption, error, or the like.à à OED. Older literature provides plenty of examples of the use of abash as a verb: That you are a princess does not abash me, but that you are you is enough to make me doubt my sanity as I ask you, my princess, to be mine. A Princess of Mars, Edgar Rice Burroughs The titter that rippled around the room appeared to abash the boy, but in reality that result was caused rather more by his worshipful awe of his unknown idol and the dread pleasure that lay in his high good fortune. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain. (The teacher has just sent Tom to sit with the girls.) Most of the examples I find in recent writing use the -ed form abashed to describe a person whom a remark or occurrence has caused to feel embarrassed, humiliated, or ashamed. Bruce had the sense to look abashed as he came out of his office looking dry and handsome and seeing Betty standing next to her desk dripping and wet. (review of an Ugly Betty episode) Though he does his best to cover himself with his hands and look abashed, Stiller merely comes off as ridiculous. (review of Ben Stiller movie) She seems to look abashed in her photos all tarted-up for the media. (comment on Scarlett Johanssonââ¬â¢s publicity photos) According to the OED, the reflexive use is obsolete, but it is in use on the web: dont abash yourself for jumping the gun Do You Abash Yourself With These Negotiating Mistakes? when we believed the GOP could not abash itself any more it The strangestand most abundantuse of abash that I found was in gibberish postings like these: I deliberate on the most impressive horror you desideratum to do when starting in a home based affair is to figure out your budget before you start and stick to it.à Donââ¬â¢t abash yourself in a fix financially where you last will and testament be hurt if it doesnââ¬â¢t à This is from a site purporting to provide information for running a home based business. You don t charge to be a hero and do everything, and anticipate of everything, yourself. Abhorrence to acquaint you this but, if you alpha out you DON T understand aggregate ok so don t abash yourself by cerebration you do The second example had a byline. I was surprised that anyone would put her name to such stuff. Then I found one of my own posts transformed into gibberish with my name still attached to it. A group of fiction sites connector to posts on the DailyWritingTips neighbourhood. We like that. Sometimes they overreach a clear up excerpt followed alongside a connector to the remainder of the article on our neighbourhood. I date nothing falter with that. (Original here) Bottom line on abash: by all means, use abash when it seems to be just the right word. Just remember that it does not mean the same thing as bash. America as an Imperialist Power Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
America as an Imperialist Power - Essay Example Imperialism is the policy or practice in which one country starts to enforce an indirect control over other weaker nation. The reason behind a weak nation being controlled by imperialists is because they have unbalanced economy, governance, and infrastructure. Imperialism comes into practice, when a stronger nation for the sake of economics and other political benefits take over the indirect control, which involves the use of power beyond its border on weaker nation. The cause of imperialism includes the unwillingness of the victim nations to control which is due to weak economics, foreign political structure and a threatening repute of strong holding states. The world still is suffering the consequences of imperialism, which took place in the last decades of the nineteenth century. It can be noticed that imperialism is applied by countries such as US or Germany, which has helped these countries to become significant influence in the global political and social setup. To understand the entire study of empire system, it is important to first comprehend the word ââ¬Å"empireâ⬠. The term empire comes from a Latin origination. Empire means power or authority, a control that associates to a kingdom, a state or an emperorship. Empire system basically intends to control over the sovereignty of other state by forceful means. An imperial system of government aims to acquire and get hold on colonies and lands of weak individual states due its ethnic, national, cultural, and religious diversification. Historically, an empire system emerges due to strong political ââ¬â military dominance of population over the weak cultural and ethnic group. The system resembles a structure where power inflates and weak gets into biased retribution. This is to serve the agenda of emperorship and submerge a powerful geopolitical influence on other victimized nations. In contrast the empire system resembles the ancient roman emperorship, where cruelty, ruthlessness an d brutality floated throughout the global political system (Howe). The study of empire helps in understanding, the developments and changes that took place around the world. It was just a swirling revolution where empire system dominated and passed on to the world politics. Scholars have firm believe that even today the ongoing changes and developments around the world are due to the presence of an empire system. Through researchersââ¬â¢ analysis it can be evidenced that empire rules have existed in the history and still are prevailing. The imperial system has been continually evolving with developments and instances that took place in historical eras. Thus, the definition of empire cannot be evaluated by one factor since it has numerous reasons to cope up with. As Stephen Howeââ¬â¢s states that the world has a complex history and intertwined equally with contested words such as colonialism, globalization, and imperialism (Howe). History of empires is to a great deal of worldà ¢â¬â¢s history. In fact it is being noted by researchers, that almost the entire history is associated with imperialism or colonialism. The significant study of empire is essential as it covers up all aspects related to countries originations and their contemporary situations. As some scholars consider that the world is becoming more and more flat due to cultural import and globalization by means of people, technology, and commerce. Moreover, study of empire explains the modern and historical migration, found in the world today such as cultural import, trade, religion practices, they all trace back to historical empires (Howe). Imperialism Context of Empire: Imperialism has been the most influential power during the last four to five centuries in the world history. In

Huyndai and Kya case study international business - Research Paper Example The more value the won gains, the more expansion Hyundai should seek in the US. So far, although won is gaining strength in comparison to the US dollar, yet it is still below the value of US dollar (ââ¬Å"Latest Exchange Ratesâ⬠). So it would not be feasible to completely shift all of its manufacturing plants in the US. However, the point at which, if ever, won gains more value than the US dollar, then Hyundai should completely shift its manufacturing plant to the US. Besides, currency movement is not the only factor that drives Hyundaiââ¬â¢s motivation to expand its presence in the US. The company might want to expand its presence because its main customer base happens to be the Americans. As it expands its presence in the US, reduced cost of transportation, more knowledge of the local market in the US, and availability of advanced technology would more than compensate for any costs incurred in the process of expansion in the long

Coursework 1 - Essay Example Benchmarking in the Egyptian hotel sector involved administering questionnaires to staff members of hotels who acted as respondents. 128 managers from selected star hotels located in Cairo, Alexandrian, Aswan and sharmel- sheik cities took part as respondents (Nassar 2012).
